Performance is not Results
We’re conditioned to think in terms of performance: on time, on budget, and delivered deliverables. While these are vital to any project, they do not ensure benefits are realized.
RAF employs a benefits realization approach to help its customers attain benefits from strategic initiatives. One key technique to Benefits Realization is modeling.
Modeling
Results Chain is a modeling technique that is used to build simple, but rigorous models of the linkages among four elements of the benefits realization process: outcomes, initiatives, contributions, and assumptions. The resulting model is a logical chain of results which need to be achieved in a defined sequence in order to deliver an overall longer-term objective or goal. The process of developing a results chain promotes discussion, consensus and commitment.
Benefits of the Results Chain
- Executives can see how the ultimate goal is going to be reached through a logical chain of outputs and outcomes and measure progress of the program
- The Program Manager is able to effectively review and prioritize each project and activity against the defined outputs and outcomes identified in each chain
- Managers can locate the critical points in the program and where they will be required to contribute project resources
- Individual staff can see where their project and daily activities contribute to the overall picture as well as how the efforts of other team members fit into the overall picture.
